Who is Memphis?

Memphis was a complete surprise. His arrival was sudden - a spur of the moment decision that made complete sense!

The breeder that I had met up with at the Seaway KC show in May 2022 has a champion hound of the most incredible Russian bloodlines you can imagine. Since I started researching and following the purebred basset world, Penny's boy, Paval, had always been a favourite. When I met him at that show, I fell in love.

Eager to learn all I could, I asked Penny a lot of questions, absorbing everything she would share. A friendship was born, and she became my mentor as I began to see the groundwork for a breeding program develop. In my heart, I knew I needed to have a pup of Paval's lines within my program. I loved everything about him! At first, I planned to contact the Russian breeder and bring in a dog of my own, but changes to import legislation would not allow that to happen.

Penny and I discussed the possibility of a planned breeding between Paval and my girl, Charlotte. They seemed like a very good match. We were both agreeable to it, and decided that we would revisit it when she was about 2 years old.

In September 2022, Penny asked me if I "still wanted a Paval puppy". A little confused, I told her absolutely! Nothing had changed there. But Charlotte was still far too young to breed, and Penny didn't have a new litter on the ground yet.

As it turned out, she was having one of her March puppies come back to her due to health changes within the family he had gone to. "Brew" or "Brewster" was 6 months old and a spitting image of his sire! All the things I loved about her Champion were right there in this pup. The decision didn't even have to be made. His new home was with us.

The name Brew didn't feel right to me, so when he arrived, he became "Memphis", and his adjustment period was non-existent. He got along with the crew immediately and it was as if he'd always been here. The basset pile-up at nap time grew by 1 dog, and everyone acted completely normal about it.

Memphis is the class clown. He's the first to chase a toy, the first dog to the food bin when it's feeding time, he doesn't think twice about invading your personal space, and is the squishiest boy we know! We're always laughing with him around. He is full of life and love, and the world is one big playground for this bold, adventurous boy.

Memphis got a late start to the show circuit in 2022, but he showed definite promise. He's adept at learning and eager to please. He's happy to go along with whatever you ask and is genuinely proud to know he's done well. He was a bit of a wiggly mess during a hands-on exam - he just thinks everyone is there to play and give him love!

As Memphis grew and matured, his true show potential really shone through, and very quickly, he became a ring favourite, earning his CKC Championship and then Grand Championship just 6 months apart. One week after celebrating his CKC GCH, Memphis secured the final competition win and points for his UKC Championship.

He also excels in running sports, earning his UKC Coursing Aptitude title, and will continue to train and compete in various sports throughout his career.
